How to secure a product for shipping?
During transport, the shipment is exposed to many dangers. Although transport companies constantly strive to improve their service standards, in practice, haste often takes precedence over careful handling of the package. Therefore, it is necessary to properly secure the contents of the cardboard box against all threats. How to do it? You will find the answer to this question in this text. Read it and find out how to secure a product for shipping!
Choose the right boxes
The first and most important thing is the right box. Without it, it is often difficult to think about any shipment. It is the first barrier against negative factors. Its selection should be carefully considered. Starting from the type to the dimensions. For transport, mailer boxes and shipping boxes are excellent choices.
How to choose the size of the box? It depends on the type of product (more on that below). The general rule is that it should not be too small, i.e., it should not squeeze the contents. It also shouldn’t be too large, so the product doesn’t move around inside.
Adjust the protection to the type of items being shipped
Unfortunately, there is no universal way to increase the safety of transported items. Each type needs to be approached individually. Therefore, you will find a breakdown for each type here. Find out about them now!
Glass or ceramics
This is probably one of the most challenging products to pack safely. Glasses, vases, plates – they are particularly susceptible to impacts and shocks. Therefore, their packing should be very careful. First of all, remember to choose the right box. In this case, slightly larger packages are a good choice. Why? It’s necessary to properly line the interior with fillers. For this, stationery items such as cardboard scraps can be used. They perfectly fill the space between the walls of the box and its contents, as well as between individual items. Additionally, it’s worth wrapping them in paper wrap, which increases protection against scratches. Once you pack and seal the package, remember to use appropriate labels!
Electronics and small household appliances
Home and electronic equipment also require special protection. In this case, it is important to secure the product not only against impacts but also, for example, potential water damage. So how to prepare a laptop, smartphone, or kettle for transport? It’s best to use the original packaging in which they were purchased. They are not only perfectly fitted to the dimensions but also contain additional compartments, e.g., for the battery or power supply.
What if you don’t have one? In that case, choose a box large enough to easily fit the equipment and prepare padding with filler material. Importantly, cardboard scraps are not the best solution in this case, as they produce a lot of dust. This dust can get inside the casing, for example. It’s better to use traditional bubble wrap and inflated plastic cushions. It’s also worth wrapping the package in stretch film to protect it from rain or other liquids. Don’t forget “This Side Up” or “Fragile” labels in this case as well.
Books
The most vulnerable parts of books are the corners, edges, and pages. Therefore, packing them requires boxes that fit the volume well, so it has as little room to move as possible. Mailer boxes and rollbox-type cartons are excellent for this task. If there is still space left in the container, it can be filled with crumpled sheets of gray paper, for example. If you want to protect the contents of the package from getting wet, use stretch film at the end.
